The attack setting you use for mix buss compression is just as important as using a compressor on any other individual track. With a faster attack, the compressor will clamp down sooner on the transients that tend to be a little louder than the rest of the audio coming through. A slower attack will wait milliseconds before it clamps down on the audio and starts compressing.

In the diagram below, the left side demonstrates how two in-phase waves sum to an amplified resulting signal. The right side demonstrates two precisely out-of-phase waves are attenuated to silence.

One other interesting thing about the I-IV-V progression is that, within the chord tones of this progression, it collectively outlines the entire major scale. Remember, the I chord is D, made up of the notes D, F♯, and A; the V chord is A, made up of the notes A, C♯, and E; and the IV chord is G, made up of the notes G, B, and D.

Instead of trying to headline or open a show on a weekend (you’re not likely to get those valuable spots in the calendar until you’ve proven yourself), simply say that you’re a new band eager for live performance opportunities and ask to be considered for future shows. Starting out as the low music project on the totem pole, your emails might get ignored, or you might get asked to open a Tuesday night show opening for an artist you’ve never heard of. Persistence pays off here, but only if your communication is professional and honest.

So starting with my big vision (Garner, I’m coming for you!), I know I’m going to have to work on my stride playing and block chords a bit. That’s still pretty vague though, so I think I’ll start by trying to figure out the left hand part of “Stompin’ at the Savoy.” Suddenly, that’s totally something I can figure out in a few sessions and I’ll be a little bit closer to my overall goal.

For the same reasons, isolation boxes are great options for home recording as well. With a well-constructed isolation box, you don’t need to manage the acoustics of your room (or closet, or bathroom, or stairwell — wherever you’re capturing the signal from your amp) to guarantee an excellent recording of your electric guitar performance.

It’s also important to show vulnerability. We all have things we’re dealing with. And if you can open up to your fans about something and show a little genuine vulnerability, you’ll find yourself building a much deeper connection with them.

“I’ve been holding on here for so long, and it’s such a struggle.
